Air Sealing

Air sealing is one of the most cost-effective home energy improvements a homeowner can make. While many people invest thousands of dollars in insulation and new windows, the truth is that the rated R-value of insulation is greatly reduced without proper air sealing measures; and that new windows are a far more expensive (and in most cases less effective) measure than simple air sealing measures in areas of high air infiltration such as the basement and attic.

At Green Star, our practice is to evaluate each home from a comprehensive, whole-house perspective, and to diagnose the best solutions for maximum comfort, health, safety and energy efficiency, while minimizing utility bills, energy consumption and environmental impact. In most cases, the best solution involves some air sealing.

After diagnosing invisible sources of air leakage using a combination of blower door testing and infrared thermal imaging during the initial home energy audit, our trained technicians target these areas with a combination of low-toxicity spray foam, caulk and weatherstripping. (Homeowners are often surprised to discover that the air leaks in their home cumulatively add up to the equivalent of a 2x2 window left open, year round.)

Air sealing is also an integral component of our attic cap solution, which combines air sealing and insulation to ensure maximum energy savings and peak comfort.
